She left Liberia as a refugee with the father of her only child behind in neighboring French Guinea. Accustomed to scarce resources, her son Faith stands in an empty bathtub in their small bathroom, as his mom uses a bucket of warm water to wash him.

A woman walks along the steep banks of Bailey Cove Jan. 21 to find a decent fishing spot along a branch of Shasta Lake near Holiday Harbor. Low lake levels exposed old tree roots and left buoys and ropes on the bank. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency after three years of below-average rain and snowfall in California. "This is a crisis, just as severe as an earthquake or raging wildfire, and we must treat it with the same urgency," he said in a statement.

Comforted by her mother, Tonya Stallard, 15, the youngest member of her family, had to grow up fast. She recently discovered who her friends at high school really are. Tonya is three months pregnant. âI am looking forward to things that are going to be in the future. Iâm not too worried about things in the past,â she said.

âI heard his dad say âHeâs out!â so I didnât hit him again,â said Hobert Cornett,19, of Harlan, Ky., after celebrating victory over Kenny Olier. Cornett earned Flywieght Title for 2007 Kentucky State Champion during the Warrior MMA Cage Fighting competition in Diddle Arena, at Western Kentucky University. Similar to the style of fighting in Ultimate Fighting Championships, Cornett had been training with Muscle Factory for two years.

âNo roof, no windows,â said Edd Risner (CQ), who comforts his wife, Kim, after returning to their home to collect their necessities. Thirty-five tornados touched down in five states causing two deaths in the Mid-south region. Risner has survived two other tornados. This time he said he felt the house lift up off the ground as the tornado hit his hilltop neighborhood.

Roger Yellowknife, a Marine Corps veteran and member of the Hu Puus Witam Native American Color Guard, uses eagle feathers to pray Friday during the burial service for James Swett at the Northern California Veterans Cemetery in Igo. Swett, who was awarded the Medal of Honor in World War II for shooting down seven Japanese bombers within 15 minutes, died in Redding after a long illness. He was 88.

"I'm exhausted," said Kathy Ashley, of Redding Riverside Park, takes a break while raking leaves behind her mobile home. Ashley is one of many residents who has had to deal with changes including occasionally more yard-work since new management took over. Ashley said, "we're going to hang in here till the last dog is hung."
